How to Create a Generic Carrier Connection
A generic carrier connection lets you add a carrier to Warehance without linking it to an external shipping provider. This is useful when you handle label generation outside of Warehance, use a carrier that is not yet directly supported, or need a placeholder carrier for internal workflows.
Generic connections do not require API keys, account numbers, or any other credentials — only a nickname.
Step 1:
From the main dashboard, navigate to the Carrier Connections section using the sidebar menu.
Step 2:
Click Connect Carrier. You will see a list of available carriers. Select Generic from the list.
Step 3:
Fill in the connection form:
- Nickname — Enter a descriptive name for this connection (e.g., Manual Shipping, Local Courier, or Client A - Custom Carrier). This is how the connection will appear throughout Warehance, so choose something your team will recognize.
If you are a 3PL, you will also see a Client dropdown. Select the client this carrier connection belongs to if you want it scoped to a specific client. If you leave this blank, the connection will be available at the organization level for all clients.
Step 4:
Click Connect. The generic carrier connection will be created immediately and will appear on your Carrier Connections page as active.
Managing Your Generic Carrier Connection
Once the connection is created, you can manage it from the Carrier Connections page.
- Rename — Click on the connection and update its nickname at any time.
- Deactivate — If you no longer need the connection, you can deactivate it. Deactivated connections are hidden from shipping workflows but are not deleted.
- Reactivate — A deactivated connection can be reactivated at any time.
- Delete — Permanently remove the connection if it is no longer needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I use a generic carrier connection?
Use a generic connection when you want to record shipments in Warehance but are purchasing labels outside the platform — for example, directly through a carrier's website or through a process that Warehance does not integrate with.
Can I use a generic carrier connection with shipping methods?
Yes. A generic carrier connection can be assigned to a shipping method just like any other carrier. This allows you to route orders to the generic carrier through your normal shipping rules and automation.
Can I create more than one generic carrier connection?
Yes. You can create as many generic connections as you need — for example, one per client, one per warehouse, or one per use case.
